NYU Tech Guide to Hybrid/Remote Work
To support NYU employees when doing hybrid/remote work, these technology guidelines and services are required or recommended for use by NYU staff in New York and will help create a successful hybrid/remote work environment.
Please refer to the Hybrid/Remote Work Policy - New York for additional requirements and processes. Note that the requirements and recommendations listed here may differ by NYU unit and team; consult your supervisor to confirm.

Secure Technology Guidelines
It is essential that you follow these security guidelines to protect your information, your computer, and the NYU network if you’re working in the office or from another location. Explore the Safe Computing site for more information.
- Whether working from home or the office, it is preferred that you use an NYU-owned computer or device to do your work
- Prevent family and friends from using your work devices.
- Maintain strong passwords for devices you use for work. Do not share passwords
- Install security software on your computer
- NYU-owned computer or laptop should have Cortex XDR and Insight VM installed. Read Secure Your Computer and contact your department or school IT support team for assistance
- Personally-owned computer or laptop download and install protection against malware and ransomware, Malwarebytes (not for NYU-owned computers!)

- Be sure to install available updates to your software, apps, and operating systems on your computers, mobile devices, programs, browsers, and apps
- Verify that your home wireless router is secured (do not use the default password, set a strong password, disable remote access, etc. depending on your router)
- Save NYU data on NYU systems like NYU Drive or NYU Box. Review your options on the File Storage Services Comparison page
- Handle sensitive NYU data appropriately. Refer to the Electronic Data and System Risk Classification Policy
- Avoid public Wi-Fi, but if you must use a public or unsecured network, use NYU VPN and read Public Wi-Fi: Proceed with Caution for more information. Some NYU services require VPN when you're connecting from off-campus. See this list of NYU services that require VPN when accessed from off-campus. Don’t forget to log out of VPN when not in use

Communication and Conferencing
Quick Tips
- Note your working location in NYU Calendar (Google) so people know if you’re home, or in the office. Remember to indicate when you’re out (offline, on vacation, etc)
- Use the chat status to indicate when you’re unavailable (and remember to update it when you return)
- Download the NYU Zoom desktop client, which makes it easy to start and schedule meetings
- Always include a Zoom link in a meeting invite

Equipment Guidelines
- Hybrid/remote work arrangements typically do not provide for duplicate devices such as computers or other technology equipment
- Hybrid/remote employees may supplement their NYU-provided computer with personal equipment such as keyboard, mouse, monitors, docking stations with monitors, if appropriate security/privacy measures are in place
- Before purchasing a computer, refer to the NYU Tech Standards for Faculty and Staff for guidelines
